A lush, involving biopic of iconoclastic German painter Paula Modersohn-Becker.
Painting is an unacceptable vocation for a woman in provincial Germany at the turn-of-the-20th-century, but the young artist Paula Modersohn-Becker is determined to make her own rules. The exuberant 24-year-old rejects the conventional and explores her unique style. She flourishes in the countryside art community of Worpswede, where she befriends the artist Clara Westhoff. By marrying the painter Otto Modersohn, she hopes to find a creative soul mate, but five years of domesticity take its toll on Paula’s spirit, and she travels alone to Paris, where she embarks on a long-awaited period of creative fulfilment and self-realisation.
Topping the German box office in 2017, Paula tells the fascinating life of a highly gifted expressionist artist and feminist with sensuality, humour and playful ease.
